Format
How to make a Hungarian crossword
These are fully checked grids in the style of the New York Times. Every letter belongs to both a vízszintes (across) and a függőleges (down) answer, a number sits in the first square of each answer, and the clues come in two lists.
Every answer is a word as a dictionary lists it. Hungarian piles suffixes onto a stem, but a noun is asked for in the nominative (HÁZ, not HÁZBAN) and a verb in the third-person singular present (OLVAS, not OLVASTAM). The short answers are real words too: VÉR (blood), TŐR (dagger), ÍNY (gum), EKE (plough) and ÁSZ (ace) are the kind of three-letter words a Hungarian setter reaches for.
Alphabet
Long vowels share a square, Ö and O do not
The grid follows the rule every Hungarian puzzle prints: long and short vowels are not told apart. Á and A share a square, as do É and E, Í and I, Ó and O, Ú and U, Ő and Ö, and Ű and Ü. O and Ö stay apart, as do U and Ü, because they are different letters. ÖR is a guard and OR a nose. TÖR means breaks and TOR is a feast.
The shared squares turn the grid into a place for puns. 988 spellings in the Hungarian dictionary stand for two or more words once the accents are set aside: VÁR (castle) and VAR (scab), ÁGY (bed) and AGY (brain), TEVE (camel) and TÉVÉ (television). The crossings tell you the letters, and the clue tells you which word was meant.
The digraphs CS, GY, LY, NY, SZ, TY, ZS, DZ and DZS are single letters of the Hungarian alphabet, but in a crossword each character takes its own square. SZÉK is four squares.
Hungarians know the numbered grid well. The weekly magazine Füles has printed one in every issue since 1957.
The Hungarian newspaper puzzle usually carries a megfejtés, a quotation or punchline spelled out in highlighted rows, which the solver sends in. These grids have none. The answers themselves are the whole puzzle, and nothing needs sending in.

There isn't one. In these American-style grids every square belongs to an across and a down answer, and the answers are the puzzle. Nothing is spelled out in highlighted rows.
No. Long vowels share a square with short ones, so A is accepted for Á and Ö for Ő, as in any Hungarian puzzle. Ö and Ü are different letters from O and U, though, and the grid will not accept O where Ö belongs.
No. Each character takes its own square, so CS, GY, SZ and ZS use two and DZS uses three, the way Hungarian crosswords have always counted them.
