How to make a Swedish crossword
In the puzzle world, a "Swedish-style crossword" means a particular layout: the clues are printed inside the dark cells, each with a small arrow pointing at its answer, and there are no numbers or clue list. English speakers know it as an arrowword, and Germans call it a Schwedenrätsel. On a Swedish newsstand it is simply what a korsord looks like, very often wrapped around a photograph.
The puzzles on this page are the other kind: a numbered grid with the clues listed beside it under Vågrätt (across) and Lodrätt (down). If you came looking for arrowwords, you won't find them here. If you expected an ordinary crossword, that is what this is, in Swedish.
Alphabet
Å, Ä and Ö are letters of their own
Swedish has 29 letters: the Latin 26 followed by Å, Ä and Ö. Those three sit at the very end of the alphabet, after Z, instead of filing next to A and O the way accented vowels do in French or Spanish. To a Swedish reader, Ä and A are two different letters.
So each of the three takes its own square and has to be typed as itself. HÖRA is "to hear" and HORA is not; FÅR is "sheep" and FAR is "father"; ÄGG is "egg" and AGG is a grudge. The answers for these puzzles alone contain 238 such pairs.
Swedish glues words together where English leaves a space: kylskåp, sommarstuga, järnvägsstation. Writing such a compound as two words is a common enough mistake to have its own name, särskrivning.
The result shows in the word list. It is thickest at eight letters, with more than 54,000 entries, holds about 50,000 each at seven and ten, and still has 13,000 at fifteen. Few languages stay that rich that far out.
That is why most of the grids below are open lattices, the British shape, which spend their entries at five to nine letters. The answers come out as whole everyday words such as MIDSOMMAR, SKRÄDDARE and SUPERNOVA. There is one dense American-style 15×15 on the shelf as well.

No. A "Swedish-style crossword" prints its clues inside the grid's dark cells with arrows pointing at each answer, and has no clue list. These are numbered crosswords with Across and Down clues beside the grid.
You need some way to type Å, Ä and Ö, because they are separate letters of the Swedish alphabet, so an answer spelled with Ä is a different word from one spelled with A. On most systems a long press on the A or O key, or switching to the Swedish layout, is enough.
