The puzzles on this shelf were made and published by other people using the Crossword Generator tool on this site. Using this tool you can make NYTimes and Guardian-style crosswords as well as criss-cross style, and they're all free to solve. You don't need an account, and there's nothing to install.

Format
How to make a Romanian crossword
Romanian newsstands sell two different puzzles. Cuvinte încrucișate, literally "crossed words", is the numbered crossword an English solver would recognise: a black-and-white grid, numbers in the squares where answers start, and a list of clues printed beside it under Orizontal and Vertical.
Integrame are the other tradition, and on a Romanian magazine rack by far the more common one. Their clues are printed inside the dark cells, with small arrows pointing at the answer each one defines, and there is no separate clue list. They are closer to a Scandinavian arrowword than to an American crossword. The puzzles on this page are cuvinte încrucișate.
Alphabet
Ă, Â, Î, Ș and Ț get their own squares
Romanian writes with 31 letters: the Latin 26 plus Ă, Â, Î, Ș and Ț. Each is a letter in its own right and takes its own square, so a Romanian grid is never flattened to plain A and I.
Ș and Ț are correctly written with a comma below. Many keyboards and a lot of older text on the web produce the Turkish cedilla forms Ş and Ţ instead, which look nearly identical but are different characters. The grid accepts either and treats them as the same letter.
Q, W and Y are part of the alphabet but appear almost only in loanwords and foreign names, so a Romanian constructor can seldom lean on them at a crossing.
A great deal of Romanian is typed without diacritics, in text messages, film subtitles and older websites. ASA stands in for AȘA, CAND for CÂND, USA for UȘĂ, and usually the bare spelling is not a word at all.
Sometimes it is. PAR is a stake and PĂR is hair, RAS is shaved and RÂS is laughter, DESERT and DEȘERT are different words too. In a grid the difference fills a whole square, and the crossing answer tells you which word you have.
It is also why Romanian puzzles are shared as links and printed as PDFs. The .puz format that desktop crossword apps use stores one byte per square and cannot hold Ă, Â, Î, Ș or Ț, so it is switched off for Romanian.

Not for Ș and Ț: the grid accepts the cedilla forms Ş and Ţ as well. Ă, Â and Î are separate letters from A and I, so those do need to be typed as themselves.
